Pharmacy First Prescriber Ready: Prescribing Pathways

From clinical reasoning to confident prescribing.

A full-day virtual programme for pharmacist independent prescribers preparing to deliver the five new prescriber-led Pharmacy First services in England. Build a structured approach to assessment, differential diagnosis, prescribing decisions, documentation, follow-up and safety-netting through applied clinical cases.

Your place includes full-day virtual teaching, CliniLink Academy access to on-demand learning and recordings, case studies, scenario packages and practical consultation resources to revisit after the session.

Who this course is for

UK-registered pharmacists and pharmacist independent prescribers who want to develop their readiness for prescriber-led Pharmacy First consultations. The programme supports learning within your competence, scope of practice and applicable service requirements.

Why should you attend?

01 / Clinical reasoning

Move from presenting complaint to a reasoned working diagnosis. Practise focused history-taking, differential diagnosis, recognising uncertainty and deciding when prescribing is appropriate.

02 / Consultation skills

Structure the consultation, explore patient expectations, explain options and risks, and use shared decision-making to agree a clear management plan.

03 / Governance & documentation

Connect prescribing governance and professional accountability with clear clinical note-writing. Record assessment, reasoning, options discussed, the agreed plan and follow-up.

04 / Safe decisions in practice

Recognise red flags, manage risk, apply antimicrobial stewardship where relevant, and provide clear referral, escalation and safety-netting advice.

Included with your place

Learning that continues after the live session

CliniLink Academy & on-demand access

Revisit programme recordings and on-demand learning to consolidate your knowledge and prepare for consultations.

Case studies & scenario packages

Work through realistic cases, consultation challenges and examples of clinical reasoning across the five prescribing pathways.

Pharmacy First Prescriber Toolkit

Consultation and prescribing checklists, clinical note templates and examples, shared decision-making prompts and safety-netting resources.

What we will cover

Clinical teaching across the five new prescriber-led Pharmacy First pathways, alongside the consultation, governance and documentation skills needed to apply learning in practice:

Acute otitis externa in adults

Focused history and assessment, distinguishing common causes of ear symptoms, appropriate treatment decisions and escalation.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis in children aged 4–11

Structured assessment, age-appropriate treatment considerations, communication with children and carers, and shared decisions.

Mild–moderate acne

Assessment of severity and impact, treatment selection, antimicrobial stewardship, realistic expectations and review.

Low-frequency episodic migraine in adults aged 18–64

Headache history, differential diagnosis, recognising red flags, treatment choices and follow-up.

Mild skin and soft-tissue infections and scabies

Assessment of skin presentations, clinical reasoning, treatment considerations, counselling and referral.

Clinical reasoning & differential diagnosis

Use a repeatable consultation framework, take a focused history, assess uncertainty and connect findings to a reasoned prescribing or referral decision.

Consultation skills & shared decision-making

Explore patient expectations, explain options, benefits and risks, and agree an individual management plan through clear communication.

Prescribing governance & professional accountability

Apply scope of practice, competence, prescribing safety checks and appropriate escalation to everyday community pharmacy consultations.

Clear clinical note-writing

Practise recording assessment findings, clinical reasoning, options discussed, the agreed plan and follow-up, using worked examples and model clinical records.

Safety-netting, red flags & follow-up

Give clear advice on what to expect, when and where to seek help, and how to arrange review, referral or escalation.

Applied case studies & prescribing scenarios

Work through integrated cases: assess, decide, prescribe when appropriate, document and safety-net. Reflect on the decisions and put the learning into practice.

Practical and interactive: cases link pathway knowledge with the consultation, prescribing decision, clinical record and safety-netting plan.
