A full-day Pharmacy First course covering pathway knowledge, prescribing governance, practical examination skills and applied clinical cases, with two hours protected for the clinical skills workshop.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this event, delegates will be able to:- Apply the 2026 Pharmacy First pathway criteria and distinguish PGD based supply from independent prescribing decisions, including consultation, documentation and safety netting requirements
- Assess and manage ENT and upper respiratory presentations, including acute otitis media, acute otitis externa, acute sinusitis, acute sore throat and seasonal allergic rhinitis
- Assess and manage common dermatology and skin infection presentations, including impetigo, infected insect bites, shingles, mild to moderate acne, skin and soft tissue infections and scabies
- Carry out core ENT and respiratory examination techniques, including otoscopy, oropharyngeal examination, cervical lymph node palpation and peak flow technique
- Manage uncomplicated UTI in women and episodic migraine within pathway guidance
- Apply referral and red flag decision making across all pathways to support safe practice
Clinical skills workshop
The two-hour workshop includes a five-minute briefing, two 55-minute rotations and a five-minute changeover. Station one: ENT examination. Otoscopy, tympanic membrane interpretation, oropharyngeal examination, cervical lymph node palpation and anterior rhinoscopy. Station two: respiratory examination. Respiratory examination, auscultation, peak flow technique and recognition of red flags that take a patient out of the pathway. Please note: no refunds can be given for this event. Dr Zalan Alam
MBBS, FRCGP, BA, MA, MScDr Zalan Alam is a GP and has an extended clinical role in frailty and intermediate care, with broad experience in older people’s medicine, urgent care and palliative care.
He is Director of Postgraduate Medical Education at Rochdale Infirmary within the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust. Dr Alam is also an NHS England Peer Ambassador for Modern General Practice and neighbourhood health, supporting primary care transformation and more integrated working across general practice, community services and the wider health system. He has qualifications in medical education and leadership and has contributed to the development of intermediate care, dementia services and new models of neighbourhood-based care.
