Clinical Assessment & Consultation Skills Competency Programme

From a focused consultation to a structured examination, clearer decisions and documented development.

Build practical clinical assessment skills through a GP-faculty-led blended programme. Prepare with CliniLink Academy learning, spend a full day practising examinations and consultations, then consolidate your learning through Academy follow-up work.

With a printed workbook, individual feedback and faculty-signed evidence of observed performance, you will leave with a clearer understanding of your strengths and the skills that need further development.

Who this programme is for

Pharmacists, nurses, GPs and other UK registered healthcare professionals who want to strengthen clinical assessment and consultation skills in primary or community care. Learning and assessment are applied within each delegate’s professional role, experience and scope of practice.

Why should you attend?

01 / CLINICAL CONFIDENCE

Bring structure to every consultation

Practise focused history taking, clinical reasoning and examination selection, with clear documentation, safety-netting and escalation.

02 / HANDS-ON SKILLS

Practise with GP faculty

Use practical stations, demonstrations and applied scenarios to connect examination technique with the consultation.

03 / INDIVIDUAL FEEDBACK

Get feedback that is personal to you

Receive individual feedback on observed performance, identify development needs and agree practical next steps.

04 / DOCUMENTED LEARNING

Build evidence of your development

Take away a signed Clinical Skills Competency Record and appropriate DOPS-style or equivalent observation records to support reflection and further supervised practice.

Included with your place

A complete blended-learning package

Before the workshop

Pre-workshop CliniLink Academy learning to refresh core principles and help you identify personal learning goals.

On the day

A full day of GP-faculty-led practical training, a printed Clinical Assessment Skills Workbook, observed practice and individual feedback.

After the workshop

Post-workshop Academy work, applied cases and reflection to consolidate learning and inform your personal development plan.

Your competency evidence

A faculty-signed Clinical Skills Competency Record, with DOPS-style or equivalent records for appropriate observed skills and consultation feedback.

What will you cover?

Respiratory assessment, lung sounds & inhaler technique

Focused respiratory assessment, respiratory rate and pulse oximetry, systematic chest examination and auscultation. Practise recognising normal and abnormal lung sounds, and assessing and correcting pMDI, spacer and dry-powder inhaler technique.

ENT assessment

A structured approach to ear, nose and throat assessment, including otoscopy, recognition of normal and abnormal appearances, throat examination and relevant red flags.

Consultation skills & clinical reasoning

Focused history taking, ideas, concerns and expectations, consent, clear explanations and shared decisions. Connect findings with documentation, safety-netting, review and referral.

Cardiovascular assessment, BP, pulse & NEWS2

Practise blood pressure measurement, cuff selection, pulse rate and rhythm, and basic clinical observations. Use adult scenarios to calculate and interpret NEWS2, including its limitations, alongside clinical judgement and appropriate escalation.

Musculoskeletal assessment

Apply look, feel and move principles, assess movement and function, and practise focused assessment of common MSK presentations with recognition of red flags.

Abdominal assessment

Take a focused abdominal history and practise a systematic examination, interpreting findings in context and recognising when symptoms or signs require urgent onward assessment.

Practical and interactive: clinical scenarios connect examination, communication and decision making throughout the day.

Observe · Discuss · Reflect · Develop

Individual feedback and meaningful competency evidence

Faculty observe selected practical skills and consultation activities, provide individual feedback and record the context and outcome of the observation. Where appropriate, practical assessments use DOPS-style or equivalent structured records.

Your signed Clinical Skills Competency Record identifies the skills observed, feedback given and whether performance was demonstrated in that setting or further development is required. Attendance does not guarantee a successful assessment outcome in every skill.

This is faculty-signed evidence of observed performance within the programme. It does not by itself certify independent practice, confer regulatory approval or guarantee acceptance as a formal DOPS or Mini-CEX within a training portfolio. Any such use must meet the requirements of your employer or training programme.

What you will take away

  • A structured approach to consultation and focused clinical examination.
  • A printed workbook to revisit techniques, clinical reasoning and red flags.
  • Individual faculty feedback and a personal development plan.
  • A signed Clinical Skills Competency Record and appropriate observation records.
  • Academy follow-up work to consolidate learning and guide further practice.

GP-led teaching and assessment

Learn with GP faculty through demonstrations, supported practice and observation. The named faculty for this event will be confirmed with the final course details.
