Did you get it right?
Now go beyond recognising the finding — understand what it means and what to look for next.
The answer
Acute otitis media
A bulging, opaque tympanic membrane with loss of normal landmarks is strongly suggestive of acute otitis media.
What should you notice?
Look for bulging and opacity. These are more useful than colour alone when assessing the tympanic membrane.
Redness alone is non-specific. Crying, fever or irritation can make the membrane appear red.
Check the whole clinical picture. Assess landmarks, integrity, discharge and red flags before deciding on next steps.
