Managing the increasing prevalence of diabetes in England is expected to be a significant clinical challenge in the 21st century. Currently, 3.6 million people in England are living with diabetes, and projections indicate this number could rise to 4.2 million by 2030, impacting nearly 9% of the population. Additionally, approximately five million individuals in England are considered at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
In 2021/22, more than 470,000 people with diabetes received blood glucose and ketone testing strips, as well as lancets, in the community. Evaluating the prescribing and supply of blood glucose and ketone meters, testing strips, and lancets aims to encourage the use of high-quality, cost-effective options, ensuring the best value for patients and healthcare providers.
Patients newly diagnosed with diabetes, following assessment by a healthcare professional, should be supplied a suitable meter, which will be provided free of charge by suppliers.
Patients already using blood glucose or ketone meters that are not on the recommended list of products, should be offered an alternative meter at the earliest opportunity following a discussion with their healthcare professional.
Implementing this opportunity and NHS England’s commissioning recommendations will ensure that people living with diabetes have continued access to clinically effective meters and test strips and lancets, underlines the NHS’s commitment to providing the best quality treatment and care at the lowest possible cost to the taxpayer
